Meet Katherine
My path to Clear Voice Advocacy & Writing has been shaped by my education, and by both professional and personal experience navigating complex systems.
Over the years, I have found myself on both sides of the systems I now help others navigate. I have personally experienced what it is like to navigate complicated bureaucratic systems when the stakes are high; understanding forms, policies, processes, and the right questions can make an enormous difference.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Western University, an education that gave me a deeper understanding of the social factors that shape people's lives, experiences, opportunities, and access to support. My professional and personal experiences have taken me beyond Canada as well. Living and working outside Canada broadened my perspective even further. I have taught and worked in countries where I was the newcomer; where I had to learn unfamiliar systems and adapt to cultures different from my own. I have experienced what it is like to navigate daily life and work in an environment where I did not speak the language; an experience that taught me firsthand how overwhelming it can feel when communication itself becomes a barrier.
I have also experienced complex systems firsthand, including navigating healthcare and other bureaucratic processes during some particularly difficult periods of my life. Those experiences gave me a deeper appreciation for how important clear information, thoughtful preparation, and knowledgeable support are.
These experiences have shaped the way I approach my work today. I understand that needing help navigating a system does not mean someone lacks capability. Oftentimes, the system itself is complicated. These experiences have taught me that even capable, resourceful people can feel overwhelmed when the systems around them are unfamiliar. Forms, policies, procedures, appointments, applications, and institutional processes can be difficult to navigate when you do not know where to begin or what questions to ask.
Clear Voice grew from that understanding; from my belief that people should not have to figure everything out alone. My goal is to make those systems a little easier to understand, one person and one situation at a time.
